I did not realize that it was actually a real Battle of the Bands until I saw the flyers. When I first heard the invitation I thought of it as some jamming sessions like one of those hosted by their church. Ok, I said yes already. So, why not? The contest was sponsored by Christ the Living Stone Fellowship (CLSF) as one of their fund raising activites for church planting.

CLSF Battle of the Bands 2009

Anyway, we formed our banda-bandahan of 4 members. Originally, I got in as the bass guitarist; Melvin Louie Canilao as the lead guitarist, Jun Esguerra as the percussionist, and Joanne on keyboards and vocals. When Jo submitted our requirements, the coordinator was a bit shocked (as Jo related hehe) to know that we were only 4 plus the absence of a drummer boy. We've got someone to play the cajon for the beat. Ok. So, we thought of getting a drummer boy instead of having cajon for percussion. Jo contacted a friend called Jordan but sadly his schedules are tight and he cant stay out late. Ok. I actually decided to pursue an acoustic band until I checked once more my mobile's inbox and found Edward Doniego's name. That's it! Ed is a youth leader who I met in one of the generous camps in Iba, Zambales. At that time, their church was lead by Ptr Jhun Singson who was our previous resident pastor. In short, we got Ed as our drummer boy. As a result, we did a little role-switching in the band. And <strike>thanks</strike> due to the bad weather Ate Tin's (Christine Manzala) mission trip was postponed so she also joined us as keyboardist. Jun played the bass guitar while I got my hands on the acoustic guitar which I borrowed from Paulo Barrameda. And thanks to Clem Roxas' friend who charitably lent his bass guitar during rehearsals and on the day of the battle. We were nearly 10 days away from the competition and I was really apprehensive about it because we only got short time to rehearse and our schedules hardly coordinated. All songs were compositions. All songs were composed for solo performance so we had a hard time rehearsing them on a full-band basis. We had to rearrange some parts of the melody, lyrics, etc.

THAT's us! It is usually bland in taste and is mainly produced in Mindanao (look at the label, it says there "DAVAO"! :D). This type easily goes off that's why in most areas bulk of bananas goes to waste. And making these type into chips saves the day, spares wastage, provides income especially for the low-income groups.

I'm still looking into the process flow of BC making and getting familiar with it. At present, I'm contacting a not-so-bigtime exporting manufacturer based in Cavite. Yahoo! I just turned 22 last 0107! Yahu! I was sick that day and the day before that! Im not sure if it was because I ate Razon's halo-halo (Delicioso!) or because of the cold weather. Anyway, it was a very simple celebration. We did not really cook anything special or invited friends/family over to feast! Thankfully my sister went home that night and bought me a cake and 2 dozens of KK doughnuts! Well, it was at least memorable because it was my first birthday I wore purple nail polish courtesy of the very kind Ate Rose. It was indeed my very first time that my fingernails experienced colors. That's Jose Miguel (Miggy) on the right, by the way.

But wait, there's more!!!
A small fellowship was organized by a few friends from CLYM on the 11th of January for me and Louie who was celebrating his birthday that day! His father died when Robert was eight, and at the age of fourteen he was sent by his mother to London to learn the barbering trade. He was then associated with notorious gang of hoodlums and had lived a morally corrupt life. One day, Robinson together with his gang went to a meeting where George Whitefield was preaching. At first, they were there for the purpose of "scoffing at the poor, deluded Methodists," but he was converted to Christ that day. Years after, he sensed that God's calling him to preach and enter the ministry of the Methodist church. After some time, he left for Cambridge and became a Baptist pastor; an able theologian through his writings of many theological works as well as several hymns.

Come, Thou Fount was written by Robinson when he was 23 years old. The video I uploaded here contained the first verse of this song. The interesting expression, however, is contained in the second stanza which says, "Here I raise mine Ebenezer-Hither by Thy help I'm come." This language is taken from 1Samuel 7:12, where the Ebenezer is a symbol of God's faithfulness. An expression in the third verse, "prone to wander-Lord, I feel it-Prone to leave the God I love," seems to have been prophetic of Robinson's later years, as once again his life became characterized by lapses into sin, unstableness.

The story is told that Robinson was one day riding a stagecoach when he noticed a woman deeply engrossed with a hymn book. During an ensuing conversation the lady turned to Robinson and asked what he thought of the hymn she was humming. Robinson burst into tears and said, "Madam, I am the poor unhappy man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give a thousand worlds, if I had them, to enjoy the feelings I had then."

Reference:
Osbeck, K.W. Revisiting the National Museum and the Rizal Museum is a like a stopover to a fairy tale museum. The objects and narratives give me an awkward feeling of amusement without a 100% belief—the same feeling whenever I read a fiction novel. But as I learned the intricacy of the relationship of museums to nation building, I came to realize the importance of knowing and ‘loving your own’. And part of embracing the realities of the past is the onset of education. According to My Pedagogic Creed, all education proceeds by the participation of the individual in the social consciousness of the race. By this definition, I would say that the early Filipinos during the time of colonialism are educated; whether they be illustrados (like JPRizal) or katipuneros (like ABonifacio) or indios (the Filipino masses as generalized by friars). These people are considered to be contributors of who Filipinos are right now; illustrados represent pursuit of excellence, katipuneros represent the love for country, the masses represent the power of unity. We are what we are right now because of our past.

2. The Rizal Museum is not just a showcase of how brilliant Rizal is in terms of almost everything. One thing I see during the visit is that while Rizal tried so much to use his gifts to uplift our nation his efforts seem in vain as our present situation worsens. He was fighting for the freedom of the many. Quoting from Liberalism and Social Action, “Freedom is not something that can be handed to men as a gift from outside, whether by old fashioned dynastic benevolent despotism or by new-fashioned dictatorship, whether of the proletarian or of the fascist order. It is something which can be had only as individuals participate in winning it…” For me, he was the best example of a free man during his time. Up until now, his works may be a source of inspiration for students like me to be better Filipinos.

*Picture Credits: Lino Almuenda her name is (Queen) Elizabeth Samson (and Delilah). Abeth, as popularly known by many friends and chorvaness, is my childhood friend (sis!). By the way, the picture on the left (bottom) is Abeth and Dong laughing out loud while sharing their stories about Melvin Louie Canilao. (Louie boy, if you're reading this right now, it's nothing personal. Hehe. They were just talking about them bullying you. Bad girls! Haha! Remember last night during rehearsals? Peace!) The candid picture was taken by Rianna Lou Juarez. I've known Abeth since 3rd grade. Me and my sister met Abeth in church in one sunday school and we became best friends ever since.

Figure 3. She is the 6th of the 9 children of Mr. and Mrs. Teodoro Samson. She became a working student while pursuing her studies at Malabon University with a major in Accountancy. Today, Abeth works in Banco de Oro main office in Makati.

Meet Abeth----

Favorite expression: "Ay!" When I checked it today to finish it I got completely lost! Here's the copy of the draft:

"The frog never really knew that there is a pond nearby. He went anyway as if some external force caused him so. The pond was alright, it was quite unclear, not too shallow and not too deep; but to the frog it was a bit mysterious and yet funny coz it's not green like those in movies or cartoons. The frog met his new friends from around. He was so amused at them that he thought deep inside that he was meant to be there. They played around and they really got along well. One is an alligator, a swan, and a monkey. The frog got really close with the alligator. Aside from the fact they are both reptiles, the frog saw that the alligator was someone to look up and someone he could confide to. The alligator was strong, he looks guile sometimes, wild and too dangerous but deep inside he has a tender heart; and he got confuse at times if he'd show his reality-- deep, sensitive, struggling. He was known to be the other way around. "

I read it for several times and refreshed my mind a bit but I was not able to recall who the frog was! Or the swan? the monkey? the alligator? So there, I partially aborted to complete the story until I remember the exact meanings and relationships of my characters. Funny, it was supposed to be my love story but I completely (or just for now) forgot everything in just a week! But I will be back with it. I somehow conceive that I am experiencing a reboot right at this very moment! Every thing back to zero. Every thing in its basic format; without any added software or applications, no antivirus, or frostwire. This is MarniePakyaw and the girl on the side is the Prime Minister of Sorority Girl, Inc. We are at the UP College of Home Economics library trying to be studious. And by the way, we just finished my first ever avatar. In 30 minutes I will be posting it here. At the back of Prime Minister JanZun are the books for Hotel, Restaurant, and Institution Management. Those are great books read by great people. It is already 10:55am (Philippine Time) and luckily our HRIM101 class professor is on a meeting so I'm free today from 1130-1pm. :)
                                                                                             SURPRISE!!!!!
She is my avatar. Dong versus Sarah G.

My sister Dong turns twenty today. I call her Dong first. Her real name is Madelle. Let's follow the etymology of her name: Madelle ---> Madolfie ---> Madongdong ---> Madong (Madie/Madz) ---> Dong (Udong). But of course this is my own version of her namevolution.

No obvious celebration here in the house. Dong doesn't want the fuzz of preparing all the food stuff and the hang of taking care of the mess after. By the way, is it (Figure 1) not cute? Sarah G finally found her look-alike...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY UDONG!
